Sandia is an experimental quartet that specializes in Intense Genre Swapping, Jumping, Bending and Morphing. All of this is done from within (mostly) their original music.Hailing from Huntsville, Alabama they are seriously focused on creating high energy performances, thought-provoking lyrics, intricate compositional passages, and random spurts of improvisations.
After playing previously in a musical project that didn’t work out, these four musicians dedicated all of their energies into playing, arranging, and writing all original music. Being inspired by everything from experimental jazz-fusion, reggae, and funk, to hip-hop, trip-hop, electronic, latin, metal, progressive rock, psychedelia and avant garde compositions; Sandia creates a tasteful, fun, creative yet serious mesh of styles. With a love for new musical experiences as well as creating them for others, Sandia creates a energetic sound that is sure to open your mind to new realms of listening.
As huge fans of improvisational music, these guys like to take chances and explore the possibilities of “on the spot” composition. They are also heavily involved with live painters and installation artists, as well as anyone who is willing to share their art in a live environment. This is all a part of a conscious effort to evolve the concert experience.
Sandia has played all over the Country, making musical footprints from Nashville to Colorado to Nevada City, CA where they currently reside. 2005 Bonnaroo crew party after the festival, in Manchester, TN; as well as sharing billing with Dubconscious, The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers, Blueground Undergrass, Ga Na Si Ta, The Shaking Ray Levi’s, Slap Happy Retards, Muchos Backflips!, Executive Steel Band, Wayfarers All, Bonobos Convergence, Derrek Phillips and Manufactory (Phillips, former drummer for Charlie Hunter) The Bearded, Elliott Cohn’s Cosmic Sweat Society, Big Country’s Empty Bottle, The Jon Worley Experience, Lightajo, Wezooga, softer,LOUDER, Arpetrio, Lingo, Grassroots Gringos, Gander Mountain String Band, Call It Anything, Spoonfed Tribe, Daikaiju, The Group Hug, SaNa, Diskeyes, Corleone, Electric Junkyard Gamelan, and believe it or not Bone Thugs ‘n’ Harmony.
With a taste of music for everyone, they enjoy improvising music on a very personal level. Sandia’s jams are practically indescribable. One could only use the word “eclectic.” Thier philosophy is to play music with good intentions, and spread this understanding on to the listeners. So let’s get together and show ourselves what we’re capable of.
